DAN KOENIG OPENED ICHI BIKE IN 2010 IN DES MOINES, IOWA, AND IT HAS SINCE GAINED INTERNATIONAL ATTENTION FOR BEING THE REGION’S MOST DISTINCTIVE BICYCLE STORE. DAN HAS AN UNDENIABLE PASSION FOR GIVING OLD BICYCLES NEW LIFE, INSPIRING SUBCULTURE CREATIONS, AND CUSTOMIZING BIKES THAT GET PEOPLE EXCITED TO RIDE.
The word ‘ichi’ means No. 1 in Japanese. The ‘ichi’ in Ichi Bike describes the shop’s ultimate goal of creating personalized bicycles that have customers saying “Me and this bike were made for each other.”
As a kid growing up in the Des Moines neighborhood of Beaverdale in the 1970s, Dan gravitated to the empowering aspects of bicycles and their creative possibilities. The fascination persisted when he found his way to San Francisco in 1987 where he worked as a bike messenger and silk screener before becoming immersed the tattoo world for the next 20 years. Dan helped manage Ed Hardy’s legendary Tattoo City while learning the craft from Hardy, Freddy Corbin and others. With tattooing and an enterprising spirit added to his DNA, Dan eventually returned to Des Moines in 1997 to open Yankee Doodle Dandy Tattoo and attend to his growing bike collection.
Dan continues to tattoo at Yanky Doodle Dandy in between transforming neglected bikes into rideable pieces of art at Ichi Bike. He knows bikes inside and out, often mixing new technology with classic styles to realize the bike’s full potential. Dan’s knowledge of various bike culture history (e.g. how mountain bikes originated, rat rods, bmx, cruisers and more) further stokes his ability to build one-of-a-kind creations. What began as a romantic idea to open a little bike shop of his own has turned into a thriving artistic outlet for Dan – one that feeds his energetic appetite for reinstating bicycles’ once vital role in our daily culture. To do this, Ichi Bike takes a unique approach in customizing bikes, making sure they are thrilling to ride and accentuate individuality.
Ichi Bike’s offerings expanded as Dan became interested in new ways to ride. Cargo and electric-assisted bikes give people, literally, the power to do more with their bikes, and Dan was convinced by the results. In 2012, Dan began carrying electric assist kits and hired Sam Wallace, whose fabricating talents skillfully align aesthetics and function. With his team growing, Ichi Bike added inventory to include cargo bikes and became Iowa’s premiere retailer of top electric bicycle brands. Ian Holmgren started in 2014, lending expertise in servicing bikes at the shop and introducing his passion for touring bikes. Brittany Spears is Ichi Bike’s shop assistant, helping customers and keeping things in order.

When not at the Ichi Bike, Dan is likely to be at Yankee Doodle Dandy Tattoo, testing out his latest custom ride, playing hockey or spending time with his family. His wife Amy is a visual artist, art director at Sticks, and yoga instructor at Power Life Yoga
